The First Program Library was delighted to host the Caldecott Award winning author, Sophie Blackall, on Friday, November 3 In 2016, Sophie won the Caldecott Medal (the award for “the most distinguished American picture book for children”) for her illustrations in the book, Finding Winnie: the True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear. Coincidentally, that title was also voted the best book of the year by Dalton students in Kindergarten and First Grade that same year!
Sophie prepared wonderful presentations for the students, which discussed her history of illustrations as a young person, as well as her process for creating the illustrations of a few of her beloved picture books. She thrilled students of all grades with an interactive art demonstration, asking students K-3 to help her design new characters for her forthcoming novels, including a space alien and a cloud witch. Each illustration was wholly unique and students determined both the characteristics of these new creatures as well as their new name, which were either very witchy or very out of this world!
Sophie also provided custom made bookplates with her signature, which were available at the Little Dalton book fair the following week. If you purchased a book by Sophie Blackall but did not receive a signed bookplate, please have your child bring their book to Maria Alegre or Christine Nassar in the library, we will be happy to provide one for you. Many thanks to all faculty and staff that adjusted their schedules to accommodate her visit, we hope you all an equally wonderful time!
