Military History Club Visits Local Revolutionary War Sites
The High School Military History Club took its first trip of the year to visit the sites of the Battle of Brooklyn, the largest conflict of the Revolutionary War. Accompanied by faculty chaperones Mathematics teacher David Harvey and History teacher Brendan Matz on December 10, Club heads Will Bartlett ’18, Paul Bascobert ’19 and Hart Rapaport ’18 led a group of students to the two most important locations of the fighting, Battle Hill and the Old Stone House.
The group first visited Battle Hill, the highest natural point in Brooklyn, which today is located in the heart of historic Green-Wood Cemetery. Boasting fantastic views of New York Harbor, a highlight was a statue of Minerva that commemorates the battle and looks directly at the Statue of Liberty.
After having lunch at a local restaurant, the students toured the Old Stone House, the site of the dramatic last stand of the Maryland 400, a final attempt by a group of soldiers to hold off the British and protect the rear of the American army.
Later this year, the Military History Club plans to take a trip to Saratoga Springs, in upstate New York, to visit the Revolutionary War battlefield there.
