City Growers, Brooklyn came to visit House 42 and House 32 and taught us about composting with... WORMS! Did you know that some of our food, including fruits and vegetables can travel as far as 1,500 miles to get to us? Mr. Renel visited with us from City Growers, an urban farm in Brooklyn, to discuss the importance of local farming and composting.
He shared with us that because our food travels so far (sometimes as far as 1500 miles), it must be picked before it is ripe. This gives the food an opportunity to ripen while in transit, but also causes the food to lose some of its nutritional value.
We agree that composting is a very important part of recycling. Red Wigglers are highly efficient worms for composting because they can eat up to half of their weight in food a day. They are also able to have many babies quickly, which further helps to compost faster. They live closer to the surface of the soil, close to the roots creating air pockets that help the plants grow!
