Communications Programs Can Make a Measurable Difference in Society
Madeline Miller of the AdCouncil spoke with students in Yom Fox’s "Thinking Globally, Acting Locally" course. Ms. Miller highlighted the AdCouncil's mission to Identify a select number of significant public issues and...stimulate action through communications programs that make a measurable difference in our society.” A key focus of the course is increasing local and national civic participation that impacts the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Two of the AdCouncil's recent campaigns #SheCanStem and #BecauseofYou, address goals, 5: Achieve Gender Equality and Empower Women and Girls and 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. Senior Clara Vonderheide ’19 was struck by the non-partisan approach to action, “Improving the lives of Americans (through advertising) doesn’t have to be political, I think that’s an important message to hear.” Ms. Miller spoke about reaching people via various media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat and traditional messaging such as TV ads, and posters at bus stops. For Senior Sofie Fusco, it highlighted that being passionate about social justice work can manifest itself in various career paths, “Using advertising and marketing to get across important messages in creative ways….sounds like really cool work!”
