House 33 Kindergarteners have been learning about the human body and discovering the ways the brain, skeleton, and skin do their important jobs. The students became fascinated by the digestive system and how it works. The importance of nutrition is emphasized daily in House with an emphasis on how different organs extract the nutrients we need to stay healthy.
Using a variety of items the children play with on the Roof, FP Dance and Theatre Specialist Justin Greer helped the children create a “virtual reality” digestion obstacle course highlighting the major organs and their functions.
Each child experienced the digestive system as part of a team representing an organ function and as a piece of food. Upon entering the mouth, children balanced on the tongue (red building blocks) while being "chewed." They were then "swallowed" through an esophageal tunnel, ending in the stomach, where they were "churned." As they walked the 25 feet of the small intestine, villi absorbed nutrients from the food. The large intestine is where moisture is sucked out of the material, leaving the remains to travel down the colon.
