Each year, the American Library Association awards the Newbery Medal and Honor Books to the author of the most distinguished contribution to children's literature. Inspired by this annual event, Middle School Librarian Roxanne Feldman organized a Dalton Faculty Mock Newbery Committee, along with managing Heavy Medal, an online Mock Newbery Blog to share book reviews.
Before the school year started, committee members representing each division began reading books geared to young readers. The group then gathered on Saturday, January 12, to discuss and vote on the most distinguished books of the year. This group named Sweep by Jonathan Auxier the winner of the Mock Newbery Medal and awarded honors to Louisiana's Way Home by Kate DiCamillo and Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo.
