Grade K-3 students, some of whom read the books as part of their library curriculum, gathered in the First Program gym to watch as Ms. Clinton highlighted the women portrayed in her books, including ballerina Maria Tallchief, scientist Marie Curie, astronaut Sally Ride, author JK Rowling, and civil rights activist Ruby Bridges. While these influential figures lived drastically different lives, Ms. Clinton explained that each of these women spoke up, rose up, and dreamed big when facing adversity. She also explained that an important lesson in these books is not to be discouraged by cynics, but rather to believe in yourself and do what you feel is right.

 

After the presentation, students had the opportunity to ask Ms. Clinton their own questions, ranging from what her favorite part is about writing books to what it was like to be a child growing up in the White House.
