Grade 9 Bio Students Participate in Billion Oyster Project

Alicia Reid
Students in Grade 9 biology braved the unseasonably cool weather in early May to travel to Governor’s Island to learn more about the beneficial role that oysters play in harbor and bay ecosystems through collaborating with the Billion Oyster Project.
During their trip, students learned about the history of Governor’s Island, conducted water quality tests on samples of harbor water, and participated in a service activity to help further the mission of the New York Harbor School and Billion Oyster Project.  As a part of the project, schools are allowed to take a few oysters back to their school community to promote awareness about the project and to further explore the biology of oysters. Ninth grade students are maintaining the oysters in a tank that they helped to set up in room 1103.
