Dalton Joins Cornell to Host Two Programming Competitions

Dalton, in conjunction with Cornell Tech at Roosevelt Island and Cornell University Ithaca, held two High School programming contests this spring. The first, held on February 23, was the first girls-only contest in New York State. At the Cornell New York City Campus, current and former Dalton female computer science students coordinated and assisted in making this first contest a fun experience for young New York City women. Twenty high school students participated in the first event of its kind.
An open competition was again held this year at the Cornell facilities on April 5, with 182 students participating in a joint state-wide competition hosted at Cornell and coordinated with the assistance of Dalton and the New York City DOE. The winning team that competed at Cornell Tech and solved seven problems came from Princeton High School in Princeton, New Jersey. A team from St. Mark's School in Southborough, Massachusetts, took second place with five problems solved, and an Ithaca High School team placed third, solving five problems, but with a higher time penalty than the St. Mark's team. Twelve members from Dalton's Computer Science Club were competitors.

In New York City, Assistant Professor of Information Science at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech Wendy Ju gave a talk about human-robot interaction and the importance of understanding people when designing technology.

Both contests used online conferencing to view and communicate state-wide.
