Learning About Nutrition in the New Teaching Kitchen
By MS/HS Science teacher Evie Harrison
This year, 7th grade students learned about food in a fun, different way at Dalton’s new teaching kitchen on the 14th floor. As part of their Nutrition and Digestion Assignment, each science class met with Chef Charlie Forster Stewert (who’s also a HS Comp Sci teacher) to learn about rice cooked in three different ways: red African rice, sticky rice with mango, and paella. Students sampled the different rice and enjoy their varied flavors.
Chef Charlie explained how to make the rice and talked about the history of rice. This lesson complemented the students’ classroom presentations comparing diets around the world.
“From being in the kitchen class today, it made me realize that I definitely want to do cooking at Daton when I am older, and I am looking forward to it,” said Greta Frischling ’25. Another student, Rohan Shah '25, made connections about how what we eat impacts the environment and he tied it to what we were learning in science about climate change, ending with “...The new kitchen is very interesting and perhaps science classes should visit more often.” And they will...as Dalton’s new Teaching Kitchen expands its exciting curricular offerings.
