Executive Director of BYkids Discusses Filmmaking with HS Students

Holly Carter P '12, '16, the Founder and Executive Director of BYkids, spoke to students in the HS elective, Thinking Globally, Acting Locally about the objectives of the organization and the logistics behind the films.

Carter, a former writer for The New York Times, began the initiative after realizing the power of storytelling and film in creating human connections. BYkids explores current issues by giving children across the globe the opportunity to tell their stories through the art of filmmaking. With the help of a distinguished filmmaker, each child works as a director and cinematographer on their own film.

Class discussion centered on the potential moral hazards of Americans trying to tell the stories and the lived experiences of those in foreign countries, a concept students had previously talked about in class. She explained that BYkids is committed to fostering healthy relationships with locals by making sure the professional filmmakers they send abroad are passionate about the project and interact appropriately with the communities they encounter. Holly also emphasized that BYkids is separate from factual journalism in that it shares a child’s authentic, but subjective, perspective on an issue that many wouldn’t understand otherwise. It enables viewers to connect with the communities in the films and ultimately fosters empathy for everyone involved.

The Dalton School thanks Ms. Carter for sharing her time and passion with the Dalton School.
