Dalton Collaborates with Gotham Coyote

The Dalton Science Research Program (DSRP) traveled to Inwood Park to deploy camera traps in a collaboration with the Gotham Coyote Project.
Dalton students learned how to set up infrared motion detection cameras, utilize scent lures, and identify coyote tracks and scat. Students analyzed the network of cameras in New York’s parks to answer critical questions about NYC’s burgeoning population of eastern coyotes, such as: How do they enter Manhattan? How many coyotes are in the area? How do they interact with local wildlife? Dr. Chris Nagy of the Gotham Coyote Project will be visiting Dalton in March to speak about urban coyotes and help students to begin to analyze the repository of 20,000 unclassified pictures from NYC’s camera trapping initiative.
