Middle School Students Engage in Social Justice in Day of Activism
Middle School students joined keynote presentations and participated in interactive workshops to explore social awareness and justice issues around race, gender identity, representation, politics, environment, and many other important topics on Wednesday, September 16.
In the morning, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders joined guest speakers Cheryl Hudson and Wade Hudson for a virtual keynote moderated by MS Librarian Roxanne Feldman. The Hudsons discussed their roles as authors and founders of Just Us Books, Inc. a leading publisher of multicultural books for children, and the importance of representation. Then, 7th and 8th graders joined a keynote presentation with Author Adam Gidwitz, moderated by MS Psychologist Dr. Keba Rogers, where Adam shared his personal family experiences and his journey of understanding his own privileges. Adam also presented his personal story to 5th and 6th grade students, while 7th and 8th grade students had the opportunity to choose from an array of workshops to deepen their knowledge of specific social justice topics such as Voter Suppression, Social Media Activism, Asian American Activists, and Podcast as Activism.
In the afternoon, students collaborated with Dalton faculty and staff members to reflect and design activism projects, building off the lessons they learned from the morning sessions.
A special thanks to our guest speakers Adam Gidwitz, Wade Hudson, Cheryl Hudson, and many faculty members, including the Middle School Orientation Committee (Kieran Raines, Sarah Goldstein, Sloan Warren, Alexis Williams, and co-chairs Charles Forster Stewart and Roxanne Feldman), along with Return, Reconnect, and Reboot programming for creating spaces to inspire our students to reflect, grow and act.
