Holocaust Remembrance Day - A 6th Grade Gathering

The opening line of Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman’s stunning poem, “The Hill We Climb,” delivered at President Biden’s inauguration, reads: “When day comes, we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never ending shade?”
She concludes her poem with this line, “For there was always light./If only we were brave enough to see it./If only we were brave enough to be it.” In the spirit of these inspirational words, the 6th grade House Advisors created a lesson for all 6th grade students to honor Holocaust Remembrance Day which can be viewed by clicking here

The students learned why the United Nations established this important day in 2005 to ensure the continuation of Holocaust education around the world. In an effort to “find the light” in even the darkest days in the history of humankind, the students were introduced to three individuals: Rev. Martin Niemöller, Ambassador Chuine Sugihara, and Sir Nicholas Winton. These righteous individuals each played an important role in “standing up” to the injustice they witnessed. Each, in his own way, was brave enough to be the "light". Reflecting on the experience, Sloan Silvers ’27 remarked, “It’s amazing that at the worst time in history, there were these great people who helped others.” Similarly, Jack Yang ’27 commented, “Wow! There are really some good people in this world!”

The hope is that this lesson has inspired Dalton students to believe that they too can and should be the “light” when darkness surrounds us. We believe they will be!
