Since the last update, the High School Debate team has participated in four tournaments.
In late November, 16 Tigers represented Dalton at the Glenbrooks Tournament. Wessal Bakry ’24, Zach Berg ’24, Leila Clinton ’24, Adia Conteh ’24, Eli Diker ’23, Jools Gray ’24, Annika Jha ’24, Jasper Karlson ’24, Julia Miyasaka ’24, and Tenzin Sangmo ’23 participated in the Novice Division.
This group of 9th and 10th graders won 15 preliminary rounds and Eli and Jasper were undefeated in four elimination rounds, becoming champions. Individually, Dalton captured 5 of the top 20 speaker awards, including Zach Berg ’24 (#1), Jasper Karlson ’24 (#4), Eli Diker ’23 (#7), Wessal Bakry ’24 (#8), and Annika Jha ’24 (#11).
In the Varsity Division, Brett Hammerman ’21, Ryan Katz ’23, Arjun Mehra ’22, Lucas Ribadeneira ’23, Lila Sternoff ’22, and Leo Yu ’23 won 11 preliminary rounds. Lila and Leo proceeded to the elimination rounds, winning three contests and making it to the final 8 of 281 teams. In doing so, they captured their first bid to the prestigious Tournament of Champions to be held later this Spring.
At December’s Princeton Classic, Dalton fielded three novice teams: Wessal Bakry ’24, Adia Conteh ’24, Jools Gray ’24, Leila Clinton ’24, Jai Kapoor ’24, and Rex Popick ’24. After winning 11 rounds, Jools and Leila progressed to the elimination round and Jai and Rex made it to the quarter finals of this competitive tournament.
In the JV division, Dalton was represented by Annabelle Eng ’23, Jodany Fanord ’24, Felix Gaddie ’23, Armaan Gill ’24, Syeda Hossain ’24, and Sam Schollenberger ’23, who joined Annika Jha ’24, Tenzin Sangmo ’23, Julia Miyasaka ’24, and Lucas Ribadeneira ’23. Collectively, these Tigers prevailed in 11 rounds.
Lastly, Leo and Jasper were joined by two of the Co-Captains Rebecca Solomon ’21 and JJ Yu ’21 in Princeton’s Varsity Division. In a highly competitive field, the team won 9 prelims and JJ and Rebecca proceeded to the Double-Octa-finalist round. JJ was also recognized as the #6 speaker in a field of 392 debaters.
In the last tournament of 2020, the Ridge Invitational, Annabelle Eng ’23, Annika Jha ’24, Jasper Karlson ’24, and Zach Berg ’24 competed in the Varsity Division. In the Novice Division, Dalton was represented by Martine Gregoire ’24, Luke Huang ’23, Anya Levin ’24, Mirabelle Zhang ’24 and collectively won 5 preliminary rounds. Anya and Mirabelle were successful in the eliminations, making it to the Finals.
The Tigers continued their winning ways into the New Year. In the first tournament weekend of 2021, co-captains Rebecca Solomon ’21and JJ Yu ’21 dominated the Sunvite Invitational, winning first place in Varsity Public Forum Debate. JJ and Rebecca went undefeated in 10 debates, cumulatively winning 19 out of 20 ballots. The pair was superlative, not just as a team, but as individuals: JJ and Rebecca were honored as 2nd and 3rd best speaker, respectively, among nearly 300 debaters from around the nation.
