Equitable Remedies: An Intersection of Race and Medicine

The Dalton Black Alumni Task Force (DBATF) and the Dalton Alumni Office hosted the virtual event on Thursday, February 25, “Equitable Remedies: An Intersection of Race and Medicine” in honor of Black History Month.
This event featured Medical Ethicist Harriet Washington (author of Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present) and was moderated by Tanya Leake ’88.

Chronicling the long history of racism and discrimination in the American healthcare system and discussing current challenges and potential remedies to achieving greater health equity, the event welcomed over 100 attendees and received resoundingly positive feedback. If you did not have the chance to attend, a recording of the event can be viewed by clicking here until Friday, March 12.

About the Dalton Black Alumni Task Force (DABTF): Throughout the summer and into the fall of 2020—galvanized by the murders of Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and George Floyd—students spoke about how the culture of our school caused them harm. After hearing about the experiences of current students and young alumni, a group of alums resolved that these experiences could not continue and they decided to take action and form the Dalton Black Alumni Task Force. Each task force member was actively involved in many of the Alumni Office’s virtual meetings and forums held over several months. Their goal is to help formulate solutions that will support Dalton’s Black students by working with the students and student organizations, Parents of Children of Color (POCOC) and through various Dalton bodies (Alumni Council, Board, etc).

The DBATF members are: Tanya Leake ’88, Felicia Rector ’90, Mark Robinson ’74, Sarah Telson ’05, Na'eema Thompson ’01, Tyra Walker ’08, Ian Quinlan ’05, and Raymond Smaltz ’74.

DBATF will host its next Black Alumni Caucus on Tuesday, March 30 at 7:00 PM. If you identify as a Black alum and would like to receive an invitation to this event, please email by clicking here. Also, stay tuned for our next event by and for Black alumni AND students in May!
