Go Forth Unafraid! Class of 2021 Graduates in Central Park
The Dalton School celebrated the Class of 2021 at Commencement on Friday, June 11. For the first time, the ceremony took place at Central Park’s SummerStage.
After celebrating virtually last year, the Dalton community eagerly welcomed in-person graduation—and the comfortable, dry weather—on Friday morning.
Student Commencement Speaker Lara Yellin '21 delivered a compelling address to the audience of her peers, faculty, and staff. Lara used a bowling analogy to explain her time at Dalton, comparing the School to bowling bumpers, guiding students along while allowing them to find their way down the lane.
Author A.J. Jacobs '86, P'25, P'25, who followed Lara, was Commencement Speaker. In a humorous address, Jacobs touched on his experiences as a Dalton student, shared solicited graduation advice from fellow alumni and others, including comedian Nick Kroll, and told a comedic tale involving Oprah Winfrey.
A.J.’s personal advice for the Class of 2021 was a revision of the School’s motto, advising the seniors to “Go Forth As If You Are Unafraid.”
In addition, in a video, High School music students performed a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” and Alumni Krithi Ram-Junnarkar '18, Sulekha Ram-Junnarkar '20, Malcolm Cox ’19, and Second grade teacher Shobana Ram P’18, P’20, performed a beautiful rendition of Jerusalem.
Head of School Jim Best delivered his closing remarks before distributing diplomas with the help of Assistant Head of School for Academic Administration and High School Director Celeste Herrera. And after the traditional tassel move from right to left, and a spirited mortarboard toss, the Class of 2021 recessed for the final time.
Good luck to all of our graduates as they go forth into their next endeavors!
