MS Draws Inspiration From Dalton Plan With New “Parkhurst Wall”

This fall, the Middle School has taken a page from Helen Parkhurst’s Dalton Plan by creating a bulletin board where faculty can share their Assignments to get feedback from peers and better understand what their students are working on in other classes. It also serves as a place to share and inspire creativity.
The “Parkhurst Wall” draws inspiration from Helen’s work The Dalton Plan, Chapter V: Assignments – How to Make Them, which states, “In all schools a tendency exists on the part of each teacher to think his special subject of supreme importance in the curriculum. In her desire to do justice to it she is apt to encroach upon the time which ought to be devoted to other subjects. A satisfactory adjustment of all subjects in an assignment can only be made if all the teachers are ready to pool their collective knowledge of the psychology of the pupil, and their collective observation of the interests and capacity of each child. For this purpose the proposed assignments should be posted up for the benefit and discussion of the staff at least one week before they are exhibited on the notice boards to the pupils. In this way the teachers will be able to collaborate intelligently in adjusting and cutting down the amount of work set in each subject. Assignments thus become a problem to be snared and solved by the entire staff together.”
