This week, Dalton middle school students (Grades 5-8) participated in the School’s 7th annual Spelling Bee. Each grade held grade-level bees to determine who would square off in the schoolwide final. Then, on Wednesday, January 19, the students competed for the right to represent Dalton in the NYC Regional Competition.
The event was live-streamed for students in Grades 4,5,7, and 8, while sixth grade students attended the Bee in person in the Martin Theater.
Eighth grader Olivia Meyer '26 earned first place honors, Becca Chung '27 took second place, and Stella Miller '26 finished third. Special congratulations to Olivia on earning her fourth schoolwide victory and her upcoming foray into the citywide Bee!
The first and second-place finishers each advance to compete in the NYC Regional. That contest has a written qualifier and then an in-person competition in March.
The National Spelling Bee began in 1925 in Louisville, Kentucky. It has been held every year except for 1943-45 due to WW II and in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In recent years the Scripps Company has sponsored the Bee and underwritten the college scholarships that are awarded to the winners in an annual competition in Washington, D.C.
