HS History Class Tours Lower East Side to Study Ethnic Enclaves
Juniors in HS History Teacher Dr. Shira Kohn’s class embarked on a day-long walking tour of the Lower East Side on May 17 to consider the impact of migration and the development of ethnic enclaves. The experience echoed the central theme of the students' primary history research project.
This Jewish historical experience served as a case study to consider why people move, how they maintain connections to family and traditions, and how acculturation can unfold.
Tour stops included a variety of synagogues, benevolent aid societies, and shops founded and maintained by Jews who came to America in the first decades of the 20th Century.
Students also engaged in a bit of impromptu community service when an artist sought help with moving an art installation; they readily agreed to assist!
