3rd Grade Visits Inwood Hill Park for Indigenous Peoples Unit
As a part of their Indigenous Peoples unit, 3rd Graders in Scaringi House visited Inwood Hill Park on June 7. The students explored the 196-acre park’s rock structures, once used as a seasonal camp by the Lenape people.
While at the park, Archaeology Teacher Neil Goldberg told students about the legend of Peter Minuit (the Dutch colonial governor of New Amsterdam), who purchased the island of Manhattan from the Lenape for a handful of trinkets. The class also discussed the impact of European contact on native tribes and the idea of ownership, a foreign concept to Native Peoples. On display at the park is a plaque on a large rock that marks the site of the transaction.
Lastly, the students talked about how Henry Hudson passed Inwood Hill while traveling up the Hudson River, which tied in the class's Age of Exploration unit.
The full day of exploration concluded with a fun picnic in the park!
