9th Graders Begin History Research Project “The Way They Lived Then”
To begin work on their history project entitled “The Way They Lived Then,” 9th graders set out to discover details about the lives of ancient, medieval, or early modern peoples based on a piece of material culture on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
After a two-year hiatus, students are back visiting the Met and sketching their objects. While in the museum, students examine their objects to conduct a “visual analysis" in terms of a preliminary sketch.
Children's book author and illustrator David Macaulay – Dalton’s Original Mind Scholar in 2009-2010 – inspired this project, suggesting to teachers that sketching be incorporated into students' research.
