5th Graders Learn How Light is Used in Theater

In collaboration with Theater Department Teacher Meg Zeder and Lighting Designer/HS Assistant Director for Operations Charlie Stewert, 5th graders took a trip down to the set of the musical Urinetown in the Martin Theater to learn how lighting designers use colored light to tell stories on stage
This science class trip coincided with the students’ recent study on how light impacts our lives. They began the year with a series of hands-on and virtual investigations into the properties of light to discover how light travels, what happens when light interacts with matter, and why we see colored light.

From the lights' ability to set the tone of a scene, draw the audience’s eye to the main character, and even consider how colored light interacts with costumes, students experienced how their knowledge of the properties of light apply in real-life scenarios.

A huge thanks to HS Junior Griffin Yellin '24 for helping with the 5th Grade’s color and light show in the theater!
