Ceramics Students Head Upstate for Raku Firing Trip

Visual Arts Teacher David Rubin took a large group of ceramics students to Upstate New York to experience outdoor Raku firing!
The Raku process introduces students to an up-close exploration of the ceramic process. Custom-formulated glazes, mixed in the Dalton studios by students, are fired in high-speed kilns designed to allow the removal of wares at the moment when the glazes turn to liquid glass.

When the objects are glowing red hot, they are placed into bins with straws that catch on fire instantaneously. The interaction of flame, smoke, and the changing chemistry of the metallic oxides in the glazes lead to dramatic surface effects unique to this process.

The group enjoyed the outdoors, keeping warm with campfires, and even making homemade pizza in a wood oven!
