Students and Educators Flock to Dalton for CC Fest 2023

Dalton hosted CC Fest NYC 2023, Creative Coding Fest, a celebration of creative coding for students and teachers in NYC on January 28. The event was organized by K-12 Computer Science Department Chair Saber Khan and students Theodore Chan '25, Elizabeth Heller '25, Arjun Kalbag '25, and Daniel Wagman '25, who met weekly – beginning in November – to plan the event. Processing Foundation, an organization that promotes open-source tools for the arts, also helped support the festival.
The event included 12 workshops led by educators and students, including Alex Berman '26, Erim Keresteci '25, and Dalton Computer Science Teacher Jessica Valarezo, along with two notable keynotes from Dan Shiffman of NYU and Coding Train on YouTube, and Christy Crawford, Senior Director of Partnerships and Culturally Responsive Education – Computer Science for All, at the NYC Department of Education. During lunch, attendees took the opportunity to network and connect.

Volunteers Nicholas Brown '25, Sophie Kim-Yatter '26, Maxwell Massiah '25, Ariella Resnikoff-Diaz '26, and Pema Tsomo '26 also helped support the collaborative effort.

During this event, 180 registrants arrived at Dalton, excited to experience the festival. In total, students from 30 different educational institutions, more than 25 educators, and staff members from Girls Who Code, Code.org, and the NYC DOE CSforAll team were in attendance.

This is the 17th iteration of the event and the first to be held in person since 2016. The organizers are excited to see how they can grow and expand this event!
