Ninth Graders Meet with Legal Fellows from the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University
Ninth-grade students participated in a workshop with Mayze Teitler and Alexia Ramirez, legal fellows from the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University on Friday, June 9. The presentation and discussion focused on the First Amendment and social media which led students to think about content moderation, access to social media platforms, and the ways in which the Constitution pertains to novel forms of information dissemination and self-expression.
Using a polling exercise, the fellows demonstrated the complexity of content moderation and attempts at regulation, and this informed subsequent small-group conversations. Students considered the Constitution broadly, their own experiences, and the Dalton student handbook specifically to anchor a direct consideration of these issues and the way they have an impact on our personal and collective experiences. This was a fitting culmination to the recent engagement with the Constitution (please see the student showcase of Constitution projects that showcases the students’ robust consideration of the Constitution under the Projects menu) and the year as a whole.
