6th Graders Connect Ancient Civilizations with a Captivating Silk Road Trade Exhibition

Students in Maggie Dobbins's and Raleigh Trissel's 6th grade classes recently concluded their in-depth study of Ancient China, Greece, and Rome by organizing a captivating trade exhibition. Collaborating with their enthusiastic teachers, Michelle Marcus and Neil Goldberg, the students sought to unite their knowledge from three trimesters of history curriculum. Recognizing the interconnectedness of these civilizations through trade along the Silk Road and maritime routes, the class curated an impressive display of maps and commodities.
Within the classroom, students embarked on a journey through time and space. They explored various trade hubs, including Han China, the Kushan Empire, the Parthian Empire, Northern Africa, and the Roman Empire. Each region showcased its unique contributions to the ancient trade network. Han China displayed silk cocoons, silk thread, silk, and lacquerware, while the Kushan Empire exhibited malachite, horses, peacocks, peacock feathers, sapphire, and amethyst. The Parthian Empire presented tortoise shells, frankincense, and a collection of other valuable items. Notably, Northern Africa captivated visitors with leopard skins, elephant tusks, myrrh, and white sand. Lastly, the Roman Empire showcased exquisite treasures like rabbit fur, fox fur, gold, lead, silver, statues, and bronze.

By delving into the intricate web of trade routes that once spanned continents, students deepened their understanding of ancient civilizations and also fostered a sense of global interconnectedness. This trade exhibition provided a remarkable culmination to their studies.
