2nd Graders Spice Up the Classroom with Salsa Dancing
As part of an initiative to "Dance Around the World" in the First Program "Dance-Theatre" class, 2nd Grade students "traveled" to Cuba this week to learn about salsa dancing in honor of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month. Just like how the salsa dish combines many ingredients to create a delicious sauce, salsa dance combines many styles, such as mambo, pachanga, and rumba, to create a social and inclusive dance style. Students watched salsa dance videos and observed the movements and rhythms before trying their feet at some basic steps. Once the students mastered the steps, they learned to salsa with a partner to music featuring Celia Cruz, the "Queen of Salsa."
