Dalton Conference 2024 Revisits Inclusion and Affirmation
The 14th annual Dalton Conference took place on February 3 and welcomed administrators, alumni, DEI practitioners, heads of school, faculty, parents, students, and trustees from 26 independent schools around NYC and beyond. This year's conference theme was Building Sexuality and Gender Affirming Schools. Ten years ago, the conference was focused on inclusion for LGBTQ+ members, and this year's event provided an opportunity to revisit and reflect on the progress that's been made in this area and the work that is still to be done.
José M De Jesús delivered the opening remarks. He described the importance of building schools in which each person feels safe enough to be their authentic self, "We know that students learn best when they feel a core safety, when they feel they can be themselves. Helping our community members feel wholeness is a big reason why we are gathering today."
Schuyler Bailar, an internationally-recognized speaker, author, and advocate for trans inclusion, keynoted the event. Schuyler became the first transgender athlete to compete on an NCAA Division 1 men's team when he swam for Harvard in 2015. He described his inspiring journey and spoke about ways to ensure all students feel a sense of belonging in school.
Launched in 2011, The Dalton Conference is an interactive day-long conference focused on productive conversations about diversity and inclusion with representatives from all constituencies from each participating school. It is a day of action and attendees meet with school peers, work with their school cohort, and hear from a student panel in order to bring positive change to their schools.
Many thanks to the over 65 volunteers and the conference committee who made this day possible.
