Last weekend, Middle School debaters competed in the New York Debate League (NYDL) championship, proving their prowess and accumulating accolades along the way.
Over five rounds of competition, nineteen Dalton students argued for and against topics ranging from whether NATO expansion is beneficial to whether contentment matters more than achievement.
Competing in teams of three, Kiran Maduraperuma ‘28, Pilar Morgan ‘28, and Anastasia Wu ‘28 took 3rd place overall. Laila Sene ‘28 and Astrid Lemons ‘28 took 6th place overall, while Maiya Kang ‘28, Lily Kim-Yatter ‘28, and Beatrice Levine ‘28 came in 9th place. An Honorable Mention goes to Jordan Edwards-Williams ‘28, who, although was not able to join, was indispensable in helping her partners prepare and achieve three undefeated finishes in the regular season. On an individual level, Gabriel Alexander ‘29 was 3rd place, and Astrid Lemons ‘28 was 5th place for overall speaker at the tournament.
Meanwhile, the High School debate team was competing at the New York Parliamentary Debate League (NYPDL) April tournament, where the sibling duo of Shreya Ranjan ’26 and Ashwin Ranjan ‘24 along with Will Foley ’24 and a Trinity teammate reached the final round. With three out of the four finalists hailing from Dalton, the students forewent a debate and accepted the title of co-champions..
Vihaan Kotahwala ‘25, Ollie Feder ‘25, Sam Worthington ‘26, and Campbell Langdon ‘26 also made the elimination rounds in the tournament. Dalton students swept the individual speaker awards, with Shreya Ranjan ‘26, Ashwin Ranjan ‘24, Emmalyn Zuzunaga ‘26, Sam Worthington ‘26, and Ollie Feder ‘25 taking 2nd, 4th, 6th, 9th, and 10th place, respectively.

At the 50th annual Harvard tournament, Isabella Fogelman ‘27 and Christopher Schaaf ‘27 made it to the octafinal.
At the NYPDL March tournament, Samuel Wiedman ‘24 and Sam Worthington ‘26 reached the Varsity final, while Emmalyn Zuzunaga ‘26 won the Novice final. Will Foley ‘24 and Campbell Langdon ‘26 reached the Varsity semifinal. Ayan Marin ‘27 and Cole Stopnik ‘27 reached the novice quarterfinal. Samuel Wiedman ‘24 and Sam Worthington ‘26 achieved 2nd and 3rd place for overall speaker, respectively.
At the National Parliamentary Debate League (NPDL) Tournament, the team of Austin Gordon ‘26 and Campbell Langdon ‘26 advanced up one side of the varsity bracket while Zach Berg ‘24 and a teammate from a peer school advanced up the other, meeting in the final round for a Dalton closeout. Campbell Langdon ‘26, Zach Berg ‘24, and Austin Gordon ‘26 achieved 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place for overall speakers, respectively.
At the NYDL March tournament, Jordan Edwards-Williams ‘28, Astrid Lemons ‘28, and Laila Sene ‘28 managed a perfect undefeated record for the third time this year. Pilar Morgan ‘28 was 2nd speaker overall and Laila Sene ‘28 was 3rd overall.
At the NPDL Tournament of Champions, Annika Maduraperuma ‘26, Shreya Ranjan ‘26, and Zach Berg ‘24 reached the quarterfinals, while Austin Gordon ‘26 and Campbell Langdon ‘26 reached the octofinals. Zach Berg ‘24 was 3rd speaker overall and Austin Gordon ‘26 was 7th.
At the New York State Championship, Arav Mehta ‘25 and Anysa Bickici ‘25 advanced to the octafinals in the Varsity division. In the Novice division, Christopher Schaaf ‘27 and Isabella Fogelman ‘27 advanced to elimination rounds, and Isabella achieved 8th place for overall speaker.
At the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) Tournament of Champions in Lexington, Kentucky, Anysa Bickici ‘25 and Arav Mehta ‘25 posted a winning record over seven rounds of competition.
