Dalton Connects: The Climate Investment Opportunity
The Alumni Council’s Dalton Connects Committee hosted a panel discussion on sustainability on May 1 in Dalton’s Library. Twenty-five community members attended, including alumni from the Classes of 1940-2017.
The evening’s message was one of guarded optimism: An extraordinary amount of work is being done to unleash humanity's ingenuity and creativity to slow, stop, and mitigate climate change effects. And, the pivot from a fossil fuel-based economy to a sustainable one represents one of the greatest wealth-creation opportunities for investors, entrepreneurs, and workers.
Panelists discussed decarbonization challenges and opportunities for investors, stressing the importance of policy innovations, such as the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. They also highlighted voluntary carbon removal innovations under the Paris Agreement and state policies that promote renewable energy.
Thank you to the Moderator Zachary Goldstein ’01, Vice President of Nature-Based Solutions Investments at Carbon Direct Capital, an investment fund focused on carbon management, who chairs the Advisory Board of Bison Fuels, a green hydrogen developer + integrator; and our panelists: Reid Capalino ’02, a Senior Vice President at LS Power, a development, investment, and operating company focused on power generation, electric transmission, and energy infrastructure; Ben Pickard ’00, who manages strategy and M&A for CPower, the US Virtual Power Plant (VPP) market leader with over 6.5 GW of distributed flexible capacity under management; and Liberty McAteer ’02, who serves as a partner in the Technology, Intellectual Property and Data & AI practices at Moses & Singer LLP.
