After Commencement, Dalton’s Class of 2024 Goes Forth Unafraid!
Families, friends, faculty, and staff gathered at the Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center on June 13 for the Class of 2024’s Commencement ceremony.
Following the traditional "Then and Now" slideshow, Wessal Bakry ’24 shared remarks as the Student Speaker. After arriving at Dalton in 7th Grade, Wessal said she knew she’d entered a world of endless resources, but realized the greatest resource was access to peers who supported her throughout her Dalton journey. As she looks ahead, Wessal said she will hold on to the people and issues she cares about, concluding that even if she doesn’t go forth entirely unafraid she knows, “I’ll never have to go forth alone.”
With his comic sensibility firmly intact, Commencement Speaker Mikey Day P’30 — who joined the iconic television show “Saturday Night Live” 10 years ago as a writer and has just completed his 8th season as a cast member — entertained and offered advice. He urged the members of the Class of 2024 to have faith in whatever path they choose: “If it’s not the path you thought, it’s fine,” noting that he didn’t start working at SNL until age 33. “Plans change. It’s ok.” But, he concluded: “Get into politics. I’ll vote for you tomorrow! And keep going forth unafraid.”
Before handing out diplomas, Head of School José M. De Jesús told members of the Class of 2024 that the best chance for humans facing existential challenges is to connect through the one thing we have in common — our humanity. Observing that the Dalton Plan centers on the power of human connection, José said that he hoped graduates — with their Dalton education and family support — will lead with kindness and carry this notion of humanity in whatever path they take.
After an exuberant rendition of "The Dalton School Song," the graduates tossed their caps and officially became Dalton Alums!
