April Kim Tonin’s illustrations will be published this fall in Mark Bittman’s first cookbook for kids, How to Cook Everything Kids. Her cartoons have appeared in The Lily (a publication of The Washington Post), The Union of Concerned Scientists, and Time Out New York. Tonin’s work is in the collections of the Museum of the City of New York and of a number of private clients.
Tonin is also an arts administrator and educator. She is the Ayesha Bulchandani Head of Education and Public Engagement at the Frick Collection in New York. She was previously the Maude and Rodney Starkey Deputy Director of Education at the Museum of Arts and Design. Tonin was also the Director of Visual Education at the Nightingale-Bamford School, one of only two independent schools in New York City with a formalized curriculum referencing museum collections. She began her career at The Museum of Modern Art, where she worked for more than a decade, in various roles in the education department. She helped MoMA apply new technologies to educational work and created successful and influential program types that are still offered today.
Tonin received an M.A. in Art History from Columbia University, and a B.A. in Fine Arts and French from Mount Holyoke College. She graduated from Dalton in 1988 and is the parent of Vittoria Tonin, Dalton Class of 2022.
