First Fall High School Play Festival Brings Three Shows to Life
This week, the annual High School Play Festival took over the Martin Theater. Now in its third and first-ever fall iteration, the Festival comprises three full-scale productions performed in repertory.
Performances took place at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM each day throughout the week, with the plays rotating across the schedule; on the closing Saturday, all three plays were performed.
The productions this year were 'Tartuffe' by Moliere, 'Pride & Prejudice' adapted by Kate Hammill, and 'Proof' by David Auburn. Direction was by faculty members Bob Sloan and Ernie Johns, and guest director Jose-Maria Aguila.
Following auditions in early September, students and directors worked diligently in rehearsal five days a week after school. The artistic process can be long and challenging, particularly given the scale and breadth of these plays and the acting skills they demand, but — true to form — our students more than rose to the challenge, pouring artistry into the moment-to-moment journey of their characters and investing entirely into the aesthetic worlds of the play.
The Dalton Theater Department is delighted at the continued success of the annual Play Festival. Part of the Department's mission for its productions is to 'enrich the cultural landscape of the school by offering thoughtful productions.' Offering three different productions in one 'slot' allows the Department to take steps in that direction while multiplying the onstage opportunities for our student actors. For the community, the Festival provides a week of exciting plays to see, each in its own way sparking conversation and connection through theater.
