Teaching Kitchen Serves Other Communities

The Office of Global and Community Engagement teamed up with Chef Jaz to host a series of cooking classes in partnership with the Robert F. Kennedy School (P169M) and the 92NY through our Generations Club.
Dalton High School students visit the RFK School weekly on Fridays during Interval, where they work with students in grades K-8. Students from RFK have the opportunity to visit Dalton periodically throughout the year to engage in our co-curricular programs. This time, they experienced the magic of our Teaching Kitchen! Chef Jaz led lessons with RFK 3rd graders and 8th graders, where they made their own strawberry shortcakes. Students learned the science behind making whipped cream and the chemistry of combining sugar with an acid such as lemon juice.

Senior citizens from the 92nd Street Y were also invited to the Teaching Kitchen, where they made strawberry shortcakes of their own alongside the Generations Club. While the biscuits baked, the senior citizens and High School students participated in a song-sharing game that bridged the generations. Both groups enjoyed learning new songs from one another. A fun and enriching time was had by both groups!

A huge thanks to Chef Jaz who led all three of our service events in collaboration with the Office of Global and Community Engagement. We look forward to connecting with others in our local community through food and shared experiences. Click here to view the full photo gallery.
