PA’s Parents of Black Students Group Celebrates Black History Month with the Dalton Community
Last month, the Dalton community came together to celebrate Black History Month at the Parents of Black Students (POBS) group’s annual Block Party!
Beginning with a rousing rendition of “Lift Every Voice & Sing”, students and their families spent the evening honoring and celebrating the significant achievements of African Americans throughout history with great music, crafts, and food for the soul. The event also featured several booths that allowed attendees to learn more about the contributions of Black people to American life — whether it was seeing products made by Black inventors from Garrett Morgan to Sarah Boone; perusing books by Black authors like Toni Morrison; reading about the impact of HBCUs and the Divine Nine; or tasting the “flavors of the diaspora” by comparing West African jollof rice to South Carolina’s Gullah rice. Black History is American History! Interested in learning more? See here for a reading list of books for all ages by Black authors and here for recipes to make your own Gullah and jollof rice.
