8th Graders Prepare for D.C. Trip with Parent and Alumnus Guest Speakers
Before the 8th grade left for Washington, D.C. this week, they spent the last month preparing with lessons and discussions about the "Civil Rights and Black Power Movement", "Antisemitism Today", and the "Making of a Monument".
Students also had the pleasure of speaking with author Judy Batalion P’30, P‘33, P‘37, as well as master sculptor Sabin Howard ‘81.
Dalton parent and author Judy Batalion spoke to our students about her recent book, The Light of Days, which tells the remarkable stories of women resistance fighters in Hitler’s ghettos. She also shared about her process of writing and research, which helped inspire our students as they start their 20th-century history research project.
Dalton alumnus Sabin Howard ‘81 Zoomed with the 8th grade and shared his experience of sculpting the United States' official World War I memorial entitled "A Soldier's Journey." Sabin is a master of classical figurative sculpture. During the talk, Sabin also shared about his time at Dalton, how he entered the profession, and advice about going forth unafraid into the creative arts.
