DanceWAVE 2025: Bollywood!

Each year, 7th and 8th grade students in Dance Styles participate in DanceWAVE (Working Artists Video Ensemble), a culminating project that showcases their learning throughout the year.
Each of the four Dance Styles sections explores a different facet of a shared theme — a particular choreographer, genre, cultural dance tradition, or social/historical framework. Students study authentic dance forms with a focus on their historical and cultural significance. The final product is a site-specific dance film, shot in locations across New York City, that captures both the essence of the style and the individuality of each student.

This year’s curriculum drew inspiration from the iconic Bollywood film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Students collaborated with guest artist Raashi Desa of Moksha Arts to explore the film’s historical significance and global influence on cinema and culture. They learned original Bollywood choreography and created their own reinterpretation of the film as an homage to the classic. The students recreated four scenes from the movie, shooting on-site in a restaurant in Soho, the Naumburg Bandshell, The Martin Theater, and a variety of locations in and around Dalton. The students proudly presented their dance film at a recent Middle School assembly. It can be viewed here.
