Eyes on the Skies: Julian Shapiro ‘26 Discovers a Light Echo and a Rare Planetary Nebula

From awe to breakthrough, Julian Shapiro '26 turned a fascination with deep space images into a remarkable scientific discovery.
While scanning the cosmos for supernova remnants, the Dalton junior unexpectedly identified a "light echo" — radiation glowing in surrounding gas clouds long after a quasar goes dark. His discovery offers new insights for the scientific community into how black holes behave at the centers of galaxies. Following his discovery, Julian was awarded the Astrophotography Prize for Remote Imaging and was the runner-up in the National Young Astronomy Award. Julian is also credited with being the youngest person to discover a planetary nebula — now named Shapiro-1.

"It all started with the art — the beauty of astrophotography captured in the dark skies," Julian recalls. "Then the science followed," sparking a deeper pursuit of observational astronomy and research. Julian has found ways to expand his research through a network of global telescopes and by collaborating and sharing his findings at international conferences, like the 2025 American Physical Society (APS) Global Physics Summit.

With support from Dalton’s faculty, Julian continues to pursue advanced research in observational astronomy and astrophysics. He collaborates closely with High School Physics teacher, Dr. Ryan Brennan, who mentors him through independent studies focused on survey science and astrophysics. "He’s been an incredible guide in helping me deepen my understanding," Julian shares.

Julian has found meaningful ways to share his passions and create opportunities for others in the Dalton community. Earlier this year, he presented at a High School assembly, where he shared his journey into astronomy, presented some of his research, and announced the launch of Dalton’s new Astronomy Club. Supported by his "Astronomy: Exploring the Universe" teacher, Mr. Bradford Melius, Julian founded the club to bring together like-minded peers to explore the marvels of the cosmos. Julian enthusiastically shares, "Whether students are already passionate or just curious, I want to give them a place to dive in."
