Health 10: Cooking Up Knowledge on Food and Nutrition
In Health 10, our 10th graders are delving into the Nutrition unit, learning everything from food science and sustainability to macros, fad diets, supplements, reading labels, and mindful eating.
It’s a hands-on, up-to-date education on food! Health 10 meets twice a week this semester, and students are not only learning about nutrition, they are also experiencing it!
Under the guidance of Mr. Charlie Stewert and Chef Jaz, students are utilizing the Teaching Kitchen and putting their cooking skills to the test — cooking, chopping, roasting, and seasoning fresh vegetables — and, in this case, with cauliflower. Recently, students cooked with cauliflower while learning its history (a colorful brassica descendant from wild cabbage), practicing roasting techniques and even making a cauliflower purée to serve with pasta. The experience was a delicious way to connect classroom learning with real-life cooking.
Students in Molly Joseph’s class also spent time with Chef Mike exploring how the Dalton Cafeteria makes food choices and operates. They deepened their understanding of micro and macronutrients, learned to think critically about various food trends, and reflected on how their eating habits connect to their personal values.
Over the course of the semester, Health 10 will explore a wide range of health topic units, including mental and emotional health, social media use, relational and sexual health, and the impacts of drugs and alcohol on our brains and bodies. Click here to view the full photo gallery.
