Last week, High School dancers presented the third edition of Outside/In, a project that brings professional NYC choreographers into Dalton’s studio to create new work with students.
To reach these performances, dancers spent the fall working closely with Michelle Mercedes (musical theater), Bella Joy Mittenthal (modern/contemporary), and Nubian Néné (waacking, house, and club/street styles), learning each choreographer’s movement language and creative approach directly through the rehearsal process.
Throughout this experience, students refined their technique, built stylistic versatility, and discovered how choreography is shaped in real time. With only eight rehearsals per piece, they learned to work with precision, focus, and strong communication — mirroring the pace and expectations of the professional dance world. They also grew as collaborators by navigating new styles, complex phrases, and the demands of ensemble work.
This year’s performances also included an improvisational exploration with members of the Music Department’s Jazz Ensemble, adding a unique layer of live, real-time collaboration to the event.
All three performances filled the dance studio with friends, family, and faculty, creating a lively, energetic atmosphere that mirrored the performers’ own excitement. The performances celebrated creativity, dedication, and the vibrant spirit of collaboration that makes Outside/In such a unique experience for our dancers and our community.
