A Look Back at the PA's POBS Kwanzaa Celebration
Just before Winter Break, the Parents of Black Students group hosted a festive holiday celebration for the Dalton community, which featured a traditional Kwanzaa kinara candle-lighting ceremony.
As part of the ceremony, students shared reflections about the meaning of each of the seven Kwanzaa principles: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith). The party also featured food, music spun by Dalton students DJ Leila and DJ Nina, and holiday crafts where kids made snowmen and ornaments.
With the beginning of the New Year, we also mark the end of Kwanzaa. Created by Maulana Karenga in 1966, Kwanzaa is an annual holiday that celebrates the history, values, and culture of the African-American and Pan-African communities.
