Celebrating Culture and Creativity: Our Middle School Lunar New Year Assembly

This year’s Middle School Lunar New Year Assembly was a vibrant celebration of culture, creativity, and community, led by our ACC (Asian Culture Club) students and the Mandarin Department.
We began with a brief introduction to this year’s zodiac animal and a short mention of who celebrates the Lunar New Year across different regions and cultures. Students then shared photos of how our own Middle Schoolers celebrate with their families — through festive meals, red envelopes, decorations, and gatherings. It was meaningful to see how these traditions are lived and celebrated within our own school community.

Our 5th grade Mandarin students brought storytelling to life by revisiting the tale of Tiger Aunt (虎姑婆), which they first explored around Halloween. They presented a shadow puppet video they created themselves, demonstrating creativity, collaboration, and careful preparation. They then performed the Tiger Aunt song in Mandarin and Chinese Sign Language, confidently combining voice, movement, and expression. Their performance reflected both their language growth and their willingness to take on new challenges.

To celebrate the Year of the Horse, our 6th grade Mandarin students performed “Cowboy on the Run” by Taiwanese pop artist Jay Chou. They sang with strong energy and clear confidence, bringing enthusiasm and rhythm to the stage. Their preparation was evident, and they performed with pride.

The excitement continued with our 8th grade ACC students’ K-pop dance performance. They danced to two popular K-pop songs. Their movements were synchronized, precise, and full of spirit. The coordination between group members and their commitment to the choreography made the performance both polished and highly engaging.

We concluded the assembly with a lively pair-versus-pair “Draw It” game. Student volunteers worked in teams — one drawing, one guessing — competing to identify Lunar New Year–related objects. The friendly competition brought laughter and excitement, and students showed quick thinking and great teamwork.

Overall, it was a joyful and educational celebration that highlighted student leadership, collaboration, and cultural learning. We are incredibly proud of all the students who contributed their time, effort, and courage to make this assembly such a success.
