Middle School Community Outreach: A Commitment to New York City Parks and Conservation
Linda Lee Urmacher
Eighth graders spend the morning gardening, cleaning and refurbishing the Riverside Park forest restoration area and bird sanctuary.
On October 23rd, Dalton's 8th grade students, their House Advisors, teachers and
parent chaperones traveled by bus to Riverside Park to clean, weed and
refurbish the grounds around the woodlands restoration area and the
bird sanctuary.
This important project in nature conservancy and parks reclamation was very successful and the students worked hard on their assigned tasks. The House Advisors dedicated their planning and work efforts to the project and the support by the parent chaperones contributed to its success. The students began their work at 9:30 am and finished at 1:30
pm, traveling back to Dalton for a well-deserved early dismissal. The
students not only worked on the grounds, they raised over $300 to purchase garden
work gloves for future use by the Riverside Park Fund. The hard work by our 8th grade
students has made a difference to our community and to those who enjoy
the park and take pleasure in its beauty and tranquility. Their efforts
are greatly appreciated. The Middle School also extends a special thank you to Debbie Scheintoch, Director of Volunteers for working closely with administration on planning this important project.
