Dalton Community Has Raised Over $25,000 for Haitian School

Eileen Gumport
The Dalton Community Haitian Relief Project has focused its efforts on a helping Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours, a small school located in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince. The school, founded by a family member of Michéle Viard-Andre of our Foreign Language Department, collapsed in the wake of the earthquake. Among the creative and energetic efforts of our students to help children less fortunate:
♦ The MS Community Service Club held an "Everything on a Stick" bakesale, specializing in items such as marshmallows on sticks dipped in chocolate sauce.
♦ The Little Dalton Post Office has elected to contribute its profits to Notre Dame. House 46 students handle all the responsibilities of post office employees – selling postcards, envelopes and stamps, in addition to sorting and delivering mail throughout the school building.
♦ The HS Yelegram Candygram Campaign, involving roughly 85 students and teachers in language classes and several clubs/committees, has sold over 600 yelegrams with distribution to take place next Thursday. In addition to raising money to fund relief efforts, the yelegrams provide an opportunity to send a thank you or shout-out to people in the Dalton community.
♦ The 5th grade chose to host a Multicultural Food Festival, inviting their parents to  join them in sampling foods from around the world. In addition to raising money for Notre Dame through a suggested contribution, the students are selling a cookbook, bracelets and T-shirts.
♦ At Warren Hines Night, HS students initiated a drive in which attendees pledged dollars for points scored in both the boys and girls varsity basketball games.
♦ The cast and tech team of the recent MS musical Bound for Glory elected to contribute its closing night proceeds to Notre-Dame.
♦ Some of the proceeds from the First Program's Penny Harvest Roundtable collection, supervised by House 36, were donated to the Save the Children Organization, specifically targeting the relief efforts in Haiti.
♦ Individual Houses have raised over $1,000.00.
♦ The 6th grade has organized a school-wide raffle, while a second raffle will be held at their "Sixth Grade Beach Party". Items contributed include portraits, gift cards, fashion accessories, and the ever-coveted elevator pass.
♦ The 4th grade plans to sell hot-chocolate in the lobby all next week, with each House taking responsibility for one day

Many other grade levels, houses and clubs are working on fund-raising plans as well.
