After much preparation -- through the study of architecture, geometry and city planning -- second grade students completed the construction of their model city blocks.
Multiple field trips and neighborhood walks led to wonderful insights and observations that have been translated into the unique buildings that comprise each child's city block.
The actual construction process began after children decided which "needs" and "wants" would make up their neighborhood (e.g., shops and services). After the construction was complete, students in the entire grade joined their blocks together to create one large city. Author and illustrator David Macaulay provided city planning advice and praise.
