The First Program recently hosted a pair of guest artists in an interdisciplinary arts session that was truly unique.
Broadway performer Justin Greer's music theater residency for the second grade recently had an addition to its usual experience...Author/Illustrator David Macaulay.
The second grade is taking advantage of Mr. Macaulay's presence here and is adding a visual element to their end-of-year presentations -- utilizing the students' sketch books. David Macaulay introduced second graders to gestural sketching via Voicethread, which was facilitated by Karen Bass and Scott Lerner, First Program Technology Coordinators.
Mr. Greer facilitated the lightning sketches in the classroom using elements of their choreography as inspiration. They will use these sketches, along with photos and maps, to set a visual scene for their presentations, which dramatize children's literature and are in direct reference to the social studies curriculum of NYC.
To create the introduction to gesture sketching, Mr. Macaulay sat in on a session of Mr. Greer's rehearsal with House 52. Mr. Macaulay gave examples the techniques himself, sketching the students as they rehearsed, creating images that Mr. Greer will use in working with the other second grade houses. The entire process was filmed, and the Voicethread created will be used as a tool for learning.
This was a unique and thrilling collaboration of visual art, performance, and technology, with professionals at the top of their games...just another remarkable day at the First Program!
