As a culminating event to the study of Ancient Mesopotamia, the 5th Grade visited the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology on March 8th for a remarkable experience. Not only did they look up-close at some of the most extraordinary works of art and artifacts in the world, but the students heard about the latest research techniques and findings in the history of the ancient Near East from world-renowned scholars who are engaged in state-of-the-art research. The students engaged with these experts in intimate workshop settings, learning how to make their own cuneiform texts, handling ancient tablets and other artifacts, and even making their own medicinal poultice based on a recipe in the oldest-known pharmaceutical tablet. Students held their own in this scholarly setting, displaying prior knowledge and grasping new information easily. The entire day was a delight!
