Lori Langer de Ramirez Quoted on Language Education and the Global Community
The Language Educator magazine quoted Dalton's distinguished Director of World and Classical Languages in an article describing the importance of moving language students out of the classroom and into community-based, cultural experiences.
Ellen Nickles, Educational Technologist and Dalton's own talented photographer, provided the cover photograph for the issue, which was taken on a Dalton Global Initiatives service learning trip to Beijing's Dandelion School.
In the article titled: More Than a Decade of Standards: Integrating "Communities" in Your Language Instruction and published in The Language Educator magazine, Dr. Langer de Ramirez expressed that at Dalton, "we have pushed for trips that have a service component, a real-life language component, so that students get a hands-on connection to the language in the country." She added that for younger children who cannot attend trips abroad, New York City provides many accessible and culturally diverse communities, which students can visit easily with their teachers. Dr. Langer de Ramirez also noted and agreed with others that technology has made it easier for students to connect with others around the world and speak either in real time via live video chats, or asynchronously via blogs, wikis, or podcasts.
The Community Goals area is one of the "5 Cs" included in the National Standards for Language Learning, but while offering ways language educators can connect with communities, the article's thesis maintains that Community is considered to be "the lost C" for many schools with limited resources.
