Dalton Rocks at the K-12 National Chess Tournament

Thirty-seven members of the Dalton Tiger Chess Team descended on Orlando last weekend to face teams from all over America to see who knows more about the great game of chess.  By Sunday night, after seven grueling rounds, the answer was clear: Dalton students know more.  We came in clear first in four sections, placed second in another, and our understaffed two-man team of fifth graders turned in a strong performance as well.  No other school in the country even came close to matching the Tigers' performance.
This was the first time in many years that Dalton entered a sixth grade team, and it proved to be the powerhouse, winning clear first in a highly competitive field.  Our first, second and fourth graders also proved dominant, also taking clear first in each of those sections, while our third graders won a hard-earned second place finish.

Along the way to reeling in all our team trophies, the Tigers also picked up a huge number of individual awards. This was truly a spectacular performance all the way around by our hard-working Dalton Tigers.

No one accomplishes such extraordinary feats alone.  The children did their part, coming to practices, working on problems, playing in preliminary tournaments, and studying privately.  We had great coaching from GM Miron Sher, WGM Alla Grinfeld, WIM Beatriz Marinello, FIDE Master Eugene Feldman and Expert Nelson Dunn.  The logistics of getting the team down to Orlando, settled in and cared for fell to our dedicated and supportive parents who, as I have often said, are the best chess parents in the country.  And finally, I am extremely grateful to my colleagues and our administration for their support at every step along the way.  This success is truly a big team effort.
